Leather has an extremely long history. Its use as a material can be traced back to primitive times. Leather has been called a work of art created by nature. Because of the superiority of its beauty, feel, durability, and permeability to air, it has continued throughout the ages to play an important role in human life.
Nippi began manufacturing leather in 1907, when the company was founded as The Japan Leather Mfg. Co., Ltd. Since then, because of the high quality of our products, the sales of our Tannin and Chrome Tanning Department have been No. 1 in the industry. Over the years, the Leather Division has continued to be a major pillar sustaining Nippi’s development.

Shoes and bags, car interiors and clothing - the uses of leather are diverse. In various forms, leather is vital to our lives. In manufacturing it, the core process is the primary processing stage, in which hides are turned into tanned leather. Hides imported from overseas are processed (tanned) with tannin, chrome and other chemicals. Then, depending on their intended use, they are dyed, dried and finished into sheets of leather.
Tanned leather is a natural material. Therefore, even when different hides are treated in the same way, the color, luster and feel of the resulting leather will vary slightly. Nippi is nevertheless able to provide leather of consistent quality because of its abundant experience and knowledge - accumulated over many years - and its exceptional research, development and manufacturing teams, heirs to that experience and knowledge.

At present, Nippi is one of the few Japanese tanners to also manufacture leather from the calf skin and steer hides that it tans Due to our extensive expertise in handling cowhide, we are also able to produce a wide range of products. For example, our tanned leather is enjoyed by numerous crafts enthusiasts, while at the same time it is also used for the seats and handles of luxury cars, for which the highest quality is demanded. We also provide a wide range of materials for everyday leather products, including women’s shoes, men’s shoes, handbags, belts, knapsacks for primary school students, briefcases, and more.
